How to Download Instagram Stories Before They Disappear

June 11, 2026

Instagram Stories are designed to disappear after 24 hours. If you want to keep one — a moment a friend posted, a tutorial you'll want to rewatch, your own Story before the timer runs out — here's how.

Your own Stories

Instagram has built-in tools for this:

  • Archive (auto): Settings → Privacy → Story → toggle "Save to Archive". Every Story you post is privately saved.
  • Save before posting: in the Story camera, tap the download icon (top right) before you publish.

Use the Snaptok flow below only for Stories you didn't post yourself.

Other people's public Stories

  1. Open the Story in the Instagram app.
  2. Tap the three dots — if you don't see Copy link, the account is private; see below.
  3. Go to snaptok.org/story-downloader.
  4. Paste the link, tap Download, save the MP4 or JPG.

Private accounts

If the account is private, the Story isn't accessible via any public URL — no downloader (ours or anyone else's) can reach it. The only way is to screen-record from your own device, which has obvious downsides for quality.

Stories vs Highlights

Highlights are Stories the creator pinned to their profile permanently. Same download flow — tap the Highlight, tap the three dots, Copy link, paste into SnapTok. Highlights don't expire, so you have more time to save them.

Etiquette

Stories are often more personal than feed posts. Even if a public Story is technically downloadable, ask before re-sharing — that's just basic courtesy.
